Namesake

The site was named in honor of William H. (Billy) Markward in 1970. Markward (1878-1947) was one of the nation's leading basketball coaches during his 41-year tenure at Roman Catholic High School. He retired from coaching in 1941. He was also a veteran of the Spanish-American War.\n

Site History
Markward Playground is located in the western-most part of Center City Philadelphia, adjacent to the Schuylkill River. It occupies an area that was built out on the banks of the river to serve the needs of the coal industry. The John Hil
